In November of each year, the RI Natural History Survey acknowledges and celebrates individuals who have made remarkable contributions to the understanding and appreciation of the natural world in Rhode Island, and to the continuation and expansion of the survey’s work. The recipients of the 2025 Awards are: Matt “Twig” Largess (arborist and voice of the forest), receiving the Founders’ Award for Exceptional Service; Kim Gaffett (naturalist, educator, master bird bander) receiving the RI Distinguished Naturalist Award; and James Franklin Collins (Brown U. botany faculty and researcher), receiving the posthumous RI Distinguished Naturalist Award.
