Science Pub is hosted by the Linda Loring Nature Foundation of Nantucket to connect people with real-world science and research. This month’s Science Pub speaker is Casey Thornbrugh, a citizen of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe. Thornbrugh has a Ph.D. in geology and serves as climate science liaison of the United South and Eastern Tribes. He identifies research priorities and supports climate adaptation planning for Tribal Nations and Indigenous communities. Anthropogenic climate change coupled with the impacts of colonization pose unique challenges for Tribal Nations. Despite these challenges, Tribal Nations are leading the way in climate change adaptation planning and resilience. This talk will detail climate change impacts and concerns of Tribal Nations and examples of Tribal-led climate adaptation projects. Thornbrugh will also share examples of respectful engagement and partnership with Tribal Nations and Indigenous communities in the space of climate change adaptation. All Science Pub presentations are free and open to the public.
