Environmental Analyst

The NEIWPCC is looking to hire an environmental analyst for underground storage tanks (USTs). This full-time position will work 7.5 hours per day and is based in the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management office in Providence. Duties will be performed largely in an office setting, but occasional travel will be needed. After six months, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work schedule, subject to approval and program needs.

Responsibilities: Assist with implementing the UST Financial Responsibility Act, a mechanism for owners to comply with requirements and ensure leaks from USTs are cleaned up in an accordance with regulations; conduct compliance reviews and inspections to ensure conformance with regulations; review compliance and reimbursement applications for program eligibility; prepare grant applications, technical summaries, and reporting related to UST topics; coordinate and facilitate meetings with internal and external partners, document and present recommendations, and represent the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management and NEIWPCC at scientific conferences.

Qualifications: Passion and interest in preserving and advancing water quality; a degree in engineering, environmental science, or related field and at least three years of related experience; knowledge of or experience with USTs, environmental regulations, environmental remediation, construction project management principals, construction contracting, and evaluation of vendor qualifications; excellent computer capability, organizational skills, and the ability to collaborate with a variety of partners.

Compensation: The anticipated annual salary range is $55,000 to $70,000. The benefits package includes 75% premium coverage for employee and family PPO health plan with dental and vision; yearly retirement contribution of 10% of annual base salary, regardless of employee contribution; 15 paid vacation and 15 paid sick days that rollover, as well as paid holidays and volunteer leave; tuition reimbursement and professional development funding opportunities.

Seasonal Farm Chef Residency

Newport, R.I.-based Ocean Hour Farm is looking to hire a seasonal farm chef residency. This is a 4-month, full-time position from July 15 to Nov. 15.

Responsibilities: Implement and maintain all aspects of the inaugural culinary program, which will feed the farm staff and visitors largely from farm product; work with other staff members, contractors, volunteers, researchers, educational participants, and other members of the regional food and farm economy; utilize as much of the farm production as possible in meal programs while minimizing waste; educate and inspire staff, visitors, and the community about cooking good food with regenerative farm product; collaborate with guest chefs for special programming.

Qualifications: Passion for making high-quality food using local product and drawing from world cuisines; strong culinary skills in feeding groups on a regular basis; hands-on, hardworking, and self-motivated with good time management, organizational skills, attention to details, and strong operations capabilities; ability to meet deadlines, complete tasks, and coordinate implementation of work assignments with a team; ability to operate safely, familiarity, and comfort with both rustic and modern kitchen equipment; comfort in agricultural settings, including around livestock, as well as culinary and educational settings; experience working with and sourcing healthy farm products from farmers.

Compensation: $3,000 a month ($16.85 an hour, subject to overtime) with a room provided on farm in a shared house, and farm product available for meals. The monthly stipend is based on a total of 18 weeks at 40 hours a week. Typical work hours are Monday-Friday from 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., with some evenings, weekends, and holidays required.

Watershed Outreach Manager

The Narragansett Bay Estuary Program (NBEP) is looking to hire a watershed outreach manager to create and communicate the work of NBEP’s partnerships and to cultivate projects that restore and protect water quality, wildlife, and quality of life in the Narragansett Bay region. The NBEP is a program of Roger Williams University and the employee will be hired by the university.

Responsibilities: Community engagement, including fostering new partnerships across traditional geographic, institutional, and cultural boundaries and strategic one-one-one and group cultivation of mutually beneficial partnerships with stakeholders, communities, and people that the program has historically not deeply engaged, with emphasis on municipalities, small businesses, and under-served communities; craft meeting notes, fact sheets, white papers, reports, presentations, website and social media content, and other technical and creative writing that raises awareness of NBEP and partners’ work and highlights the region’s challenges and opportunities; leverage partnership-building activities to cultivate and manage internal and external outreach projects; organize, design, facilitate, and handle logistics for convening diverse external interests through meetings and workshops that seek to build consensus solutions to pressing and complex natural and social science topics.

Qualifications: Master’s degree in environmental studies, natural or social science, resource management, biology, ecology, chemistry, planning, or a related field; minimum of five years of experience, of which at least three years must be in a professional capacity; outstanding communication and writing skills, with the proven ability to express thoughts clearly and concisely; must be able to comfortably connect with a variety of audiences through interpersonal interactions and communications products; track-record of establishing meaningful relationships with new and diverse people via community outreach, education, organization, and/or advocacy; strong background in science and resource management, especially in the areas of water quality and quantity, freshwater and estuarine habitats, watershed management, climate resilience, sustainability, and economic, social, and cultural dynamics of nature; awareness of environmental issues facing the Narragansett Bay region or similar coastal areas.

Compensation: Salaries for new hires at Roger Williams University usually fall between $60,974 and $75,000.

Electric Vehicle Program Associate

The Green Energy Consumers Alliance is looking to hire an electric vehicle program associate to work in both Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

Responsibilities: Staying up to date on EV market developments, including keeping close track of new and current vehicle models’ availability, pricing, and technical specifications; explaining to consumers, in person and in writing, both the technical and non-technical details of driving electric, such as the different types of charging and charging stations, how to install them at home, and how to plan road trips; maintaining up-to-date information about different EV models on our shopping tool and updating dealer pricing on our shopping tool; responding to consumer inquiries by email, phone, and an online chat function; recruiting car dealerships to join Drive Green; performing community outreach and education; creating content for our website, presentations, blog, and email and social media campaigns.

Qualifications: Degree in environmental or energy studies, environmental justice, business, engineering, or a related field and at least two years of work experience, preferably in the energy/environmental industry; strong interest in working full-time on electric vehicles; previous experience and/or knowledge about EVs, including familiarity with the technical aspects of driving electric or the ability and interest in learning those technical pieces and conveying them to consumers; excellent written and oral communications skills, including strong editorial abilities; skill in presentation composition and engaging diverse audiences; ability to attend events in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, including occasional evenings and weekends; close attention to detail and the ability to work independently, with initial guidance; strong organizational and time management skills/ability to tackle and prioritize multiple assignments simultaneously; valid driver’s license and reliable access to a vehicle; ability to work from our Providence or Boston offices as necessary; roots in Massachusetts and/or Rhode Island; proof of COVID-19 vaccination, including a booster shot; experience organizing events preferred.

Compensation: $49,000 to $53,000 a year commensurate with qualifications; benefits package that includes health, dental, 403-B, short-term disability, and long-term disability; employees start by accruing 4 weeks paid vacation a year and accrue 12 days of sick time a year; mileage reimbursed.

Conservation Associate

Providence-based Southside Community Land Trust (SCLT) is looking to hire a full-time conservation associate to gain working knowledge of Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) programs.

Responsibilities: Gain working knowledge of climate-smart agricultural practices and conservation best management practices and assist farmers to implement these practices; work with SCLT’s Farmer Training & Services team to promote NRCS programs and conservation practices with small-scale and urban producers; assist SCLT Farmer Training & Services team in providing technical assistance to farmers and other land-users on implementation of conservation practices; facilitate a Leadership and Learning Advisory Group of historically underserved producers tasked with developing their understanding of federal services including NRCS and its practices; support members of Leadership and Learning Advisory Group to advise NRCS and conservation districts on changes and enhancements to practices and programs; participate in urban agriculture mapping project with the Northern Rhode Island Conservation District.

Qualifications: Experience, knowledge, and interest in agriculture, forestry, and biological and environmental science; some experience working farm or forestlands; experience with tasks such as installing irrigation, repairing fencing, gardening, carpentry, tree work/landscaping; strong organizational and communication skills; experience in sales and customer service; must be able to work within a team; proficiency in Excel, Word, Google Drive, Gmail; high school Diploma, GED or relevant work experience; Providence, Pawtucket or Central Falls area resident; valid driver’s license and clean driving record; skills in any of the following languages including Spanish, Swahili, Kinyarwanda/Kirundi, Portuguese, Cape Verdean Creole, Hmong, French, Kunama, Burmese, Haitian Creole, Khmer, and Lao.

Compensation: $42,000 to $55,000 based on prior experience. In addition to paid holidays that occur during your regular work schedule, the position receives 22 paid days off per calendar year. The position also qualifies for health and dental insurance; if the employee has medical coverage elsewhere, they will be offered $400 of benefit pay per month to offset premium costs.

Food Education & Action Fellow

Aquidneck Community Table is looking to hire a part-time food education and action fellow, a seasonal position with hours dependent on season and the candidate’s availability. The start date is May 1 and runs through the fall, with room for growth.

Responsibilities: Support garden care, farmers markets, and educational programming; support general nonprofit operations such as fundraising and outreach; work in partnership with the program manager to lead youth in hands-on lessons in school and community gardens; lead small groups in activities to demonstrate the role of gardens in increasing access to healthy foods, protecting the environment, and building healthier communities; teach students about the life cycle of plants and their role in the ecosystem; work with market manager to staff farmers market, assist with the SNAP program and data collection.

Qualifications: Experience working with young people of all ages; experience in organic gardening and/or farming; experience working independently and within a team; experience in outdoor classroom management and garden-based education; strong interpersonal skills that reflect cultural sensitivity and respect; deep listening skills; ability to communicate clearly; bilingual in English and Spanish a plus; ability to lift 40 pounds; able to work outside in all weather conditions; valid driver’s license with access to reliable transportation for moving equipment.

Compensation: $20 an hour.

Communications Associate

Newport, R.I.-based 11th Hour Racing is looking to hire a full-time communications associate to drive visibility and interest in the organization while enhancing its brand identity and mission.

Responsibilities: Assist with the creation and implementation of a communications strategy across all media platforms to increase brand recognition, sponsorships, and grantees; collaborate with the communications manager to schedule social media posts, create engaging content, and interact with followers; contribute to the creation of captivating content for multiple platforms, including websites, social media channels, newsletters, press releases, and internal/external communications materials; liaise with sibling organizations to manage content for internal newsletters and foster collaboration on shared initiatives; assist communications team in preparing reports, presentations, and metric tracking analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of communication efforts; manage website; coordinate with media contacts to arrange interviews, pitch stories, and prepare press materials; support the planning and execution of events, including conferences, seminars, and community outreach programs.

Qualifications: Ability to work effectively in a small, dynamic organization with an emphasis on teamwork; strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to create clear and compelling content tailored to diverse audiences; basic understanding of public relations principles, including media relations, messaging strategies, and crisis communication management; strong interpersonal skills to interface and coordinate professionally with a number of diverse internal and external contacts; strong ability to work through administrative processes with a keen attention to detail; flexibility to work simultaneously on a range of projects and ability to prioritize tasks, manage time effectively, and meet deadlines; minimum of 4 years of relevant experience in communications, public relations, marketing, and digital media is required; nonprofit experience and/or volunteering experience is an asset.

Compensation: $25 to $30 an hour based on experience.
