SUMMARY:Fiber Literacy: Made In New England
DESCRIPTION:What exactly is a fibershed? The easy answer is a geographic region\, much like a watershed\, where natural fibers are grown\, processed\, and transformed into textiles and building materials as locally as humanly possible. But in an age of convenience and disposability\, how to stress the importance of a fibershed is oftentimes a herculean task. Learn how the Southeastern New England Fibershed is working to strengthen regional fiber economies in Massachusetts and Rhode Island while helping reconnect communities to the land and to one another. Director Amy DuFault will lead the talk\, sharing insights on why communities must rethink traditional textile economies and move toward more cooperative\, community-driven models to ensure a viable future. Her perspective will challenge attendees to consider how collective action and regional collaboration can reshape the way we produce\, value\, and engage with fiber.

SUMMARY:Gallery Opening: Sustainable Artist Jocelyn Vache
DESCRIPTION:The Gallery at Central presents Jocelyn Vache: Meaning through Material. Meet the artist at the gallery opening. Vache weaves sustainable practice\, community engagement\, and permaculture (the development of sustainable and self-sufficient ecosystems) throughout her artmaking\, teaching\, and life. Using homegrown and foraged pigment and fiber and homemade soymilk\, Vache abstracts and combines literal and figurative imagery drawn from the environment\, current events\, and personal experiences. Her work confronts societal double standards and illuminates human blind spots as it glorifies daily acts of nature.
