SUMMARY:Urban Wildlife Walks
DESCRIPTION:Greg Gerritt will lead three walks this spring\, all focused on urban wild animals in Providence. All of the walks are free of charge and will go from 9-10:30 a.m. The May 10 and June 6 walks will be at Blackstone Park and along the Seekonk River. Participants should meet at the Blackstone Park kiosk near the corner of Parkside and East Orchard at 9 a.m. The May 23 walk\, as part of Cemetery Month\, will focus on urban wildlife in the North Burial Ground. Participants should meet at 9 a.m. at Ridgeside Lake in the North Burial Ground. Registration for the walks are not required\, but it helps for planning purposes.

SUMMARY:Writing About Place: Workshop with Wanda Hopkins
DESCRIPTION:This session of the Writing About Place workshop will feature guest writer Wanda Hopkins\, a citizen of the Narragansett Indian Tribal Nation\, culture bearers\, and writer. She has served in tribal government\, ministered at the Narragansett Indian Church for over 25 years\, and serves as a Native American community advisor to the University of Rhode Island and the Tomaquag Museum. She has shared her knowledge and perspective with churches\, schools\, and civic organizations throughout Rhode Island\, across the United States\, and in Canada. Her future research includes documenting the lives of her Narragansett relatives interred at the historic Babcock Cemetery in Hopkinton\, R.I. This workshop will include writer reflections\, discussion\, and writing exploration centered on place\, lived experience\, and relationship to place. Participants will be invited to engage through listening\, reflection\, and optional writing exercises in a supportive setting.

While these large mammals can be intimidating\, coexistence is possible when you are “Bear Aware.” Join RIDEM Division of Fish and Wildlife staff to learn about these beautiful creatures and actions you can take to avoid issues with bears. This program is free to attend\, but registration is required so that staff can prepare materials.
