SUMMARY:Beneath the Polar Sun – Film Screening & Director Talk Back
DESCRIPTION:The Watch Hill Conservancy presents a special screening of the 2021 Green Planet Award-winning documentary “Beneath the Polar Sun.” In the Arctic’s last ice area\, 500 nautical miles from the North Pole\, a scientific team is on a rare mission to measure the world’s oldest ice floes. Hauling loaded kayaks\, they know the data\, the models\, and the science\, but nothing has prepared them for the truth on the ground. Witness their struggle to escape the jumbled slabs of sea ice by traversing a narrow channel between Canada and Greenland – the most formidable passage of the polar North. Beneath the Polar Sun won the Green Planet Award from the Rhode Island International Film Festival and was an official selection of the DCEFF – the world’s top Environmental Film Festival. The screening will include a post-screening talk and Q&A with Rhode Island film director Diana Kushner and expedition leader Stephen Smith to discuss their harrowing experience and how the Arctic Ocean plays a vital role in balancing the world’s climate. Joining them will be Chris Horvat\, lead scientist and assistant professor of earth\, environmental and planetary sciences at Brown University. This is a free program sponsored by Tte Watch Hill Conservancy\, but tickets are limited.

SUMMARY:Greenhouse Moving Workshop: Optimizing Space and Time with Moveable High Tunnels
DESCRIPTION:Join seasoned year-round farmers Mike and Kelli Roberts for a hands-on workshop on optimizing moveable high tunnels for year-round growing. The workshop will include discussion on planting dates\, varieties\, and other season extension tips they’ve learned from growing over 16 winter seasons with moveable tunnels. Participants will also have the option to assist in moving one of their 30-foot by 48-foot tunnels from its winter to spring plot by helping with unanchoring and re-anchoring ground posts\, and using electric winches to pull the high tunnel to its new position. Participation is optional. The workshop will be followed by a social hour\, please bring a snack or drink if you are able. This workshop is sponsored by the Northeast Farming Association of R.I.

SUMMARY:Annual Meeting & Lecture 'Resilience Through Biodiversity'
DESCRIPTION:The Rhode Island National History Survey’s new strategic plan emphasizes the importance of biodiversity conservation for the resilience of ecosystems … and human communities … under stress. Appropriately\, the theme for the survey’s 2025 annual meeting is Resilience Through Biodiversity. The program will focus on where and how to find biodiversity around us\, how to document it\, threats to biodiversity\, and what can we do to save it. Ornithologist and naturalist Dan Berard will preview the 2025 BioBlitz site\, Glocester Land Trust’s Steere Hill Preserve\, recounting his insights about the place from months of birding there. Lou Perrotti will talk about why his internationally recognized rescue projects for American burying beetles\, New England cottontails\, turtles\, butterflies\, and rattlesnakes are so important. David Gregg will give a sneak peek into BORIIS\, the survey’s new biodiversity database.
