Birds of the Archives: Ornithology Materials in the John Hay Library
Date
April 22
Time
4:00 pm
Location
John Hay Library, Brown University
Come celebrate birds and spring migration at Brown University’s John Hay Library with a collaboration between Brown for Science Diplomacy and the Hay: an ornithology talk and a library open house. The event will start with a talk by Nicole Moody on the history of ornithology and the field’s current directions. Following the talk, there will be a Q&A and a brief catered reception. After that, attendees are invited to browse through a selection of rare bird books and archival objects. The Hay houses a substantial collection of ornithology-related materials, including John James Audubon’s iconic double-elephant folio Birds of America, President Theodore Roosevelt’s birding field notes, hard-to-find publications on New England birds, magazines dating back to the 1880s, and first editions of some of ornithology’s foundational texts. The event is free and open to the public. Registration is required and will be checked at the door.
